Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury, through the valuable use of trained volunteers and community partners, strives to improve all lives through literacy by cultivating educational opportunities for adults. To be eligible for participation in LVGW literacy programs, adult learners must: – Be at least 17 years of age and not attending high school. – Take an assessment test and score within the literacy levels that would qualify them for LVGW services. – Agree to meet at an approved tutoring site in a public location and arrange for their own transportation or be willing to participate in classes virtually. – Show appropriate behavior while working with the tutor. Literacy Volunteers currently offers the following programs free of charge: English as a Second Language (ESL) - Adults learn to read, write, speak, and understand English. Basic Literacy (BL) - Adults who speak and understand English learn to read and write. U.S Citizenship Classes - Preparing adults to pass the test and interview Additional Programs: Transparent Language (a web-based program that students can use to learn at their own pace via phone, tablet or computer) Conversation Classes - students currently enrolled in our ESL program can take conversation classes to help practice their new English language skills To register for any of the classes listed above, please contact our Program Manager Marianna Moheno at 203-754-1164 or mmoheno@waterburyct.org LVGW serves the communities of Beacon Falls, Cheshire, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Oakville, Watertown, Oxford, Plymouth, Terryville, Prospect, Southbury, Thomaston, Waterbury, Wolcott, and Woodbury.
